Project Context:

Funded by the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) through The Asia Foundation (TAF)’s Subnational Governance Program (SNGP), this project aims to strengthen climate governance in Nepal by generating evidence and lessons on how federalism is reshaping climate action. Through the project, Clim Adapt is examining power relations, incentives, and institutional arrangements among federal, provincial, and local actors, while promoting the meaningful engagement of youth and civil society in climate governance processes. Knowledge and lessons on subnational climate governance are being generated through in-depth studies, stakeholder consultations, and policy dialogues in Sudurpaschim and Gandaki Provinces, as well as selected municipalities.

Project objectives

The project focuses on: (i) Conducting a comprehensive climate governance assessment to understand how governance structures influence climate change-related decision-making, resource allocation, and accountability; (ii) Facilitating multi-stakeholder platforms and partnerships among government agencies, development partners, youth, civil society organizations, subnational governments, and the private sector to foster dialogue, strengthen collaboration, and disseminate knowledge products; and (iii) Providing strategic advisory and capacity-building support to the TAF/SNGP team on the political economy of climate governance. Through these efforts, the project contributes to more inclusive, accountable, and effective climate governance within Nepal’s federal system.
